What is a raw diet?

During summer when the weather becomes warmer is the perfect time to try a raw diet. Raw foods are both refreshing and nourishing. Raw is defined as consuming fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts and seeds in their freshest, unprocessed and uncooked state. This can also include sprouted grains and legumes. Believe it or not, a person can thrive on a raw diet as all macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins and minerals are present in raw foods needed for life.

Benefits
There are many perks to switching towards a raw diet which can include: increased energy, weight loss, improved digestion, better skin quality and reduced risk for chronic disease. With the exception of lycopene in tomatoes, foods that are uncooked generally have more vitamins and minerals. Preparation can also be minimal as fresh fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges and peaches are easy to-go foods.

How to Begin
A few weeks ago, my husband and I tried a "raw until 6pm" diet for a week. We had a fun time enjoying lots of fresh fruit, veggies, smoothies, banana collard wraps, broccoli salad, raw zucchini soup and the list goes on. Below I have included 5 days of what I had for breakfast and dinner during that week. A "raw until 6 pm" approach is a great way to get started. Another method is to include 2-4 servings of raw fruits and vegetables into every meal. A serving is a medium size piece of fruit, 2 cups of leafy greens and/or 1 cup of veggies or fruit. Generally, smoothies are a better choice over juicing as they retain all the healthy fiber. Trying a mostly raw of "high raw" diet can bring you many positive benefits. There is a great blog to explore called Fully Raw by Christina that can provide you with some great tips. On Facebook, our local friend and raw foods coach, Marina has an active group called Soul in the Raw.
